Leuven's Small But Real Streetwear and Coffee Scene

Leuven gets talked about as a university town before a shopping one, but Parijsstraat and Dirk Boutslaan pack in more than the city gets credit for — plus four coffee stops worth building a route around.

Leuven's reputation is built on KU Leuven and the Oude Markt, and most guides stop there. But there's a small, genuinely independent streetwear and coffee scene tucked a few streets away from the tourist center, and it's compact enough to cover in an afternoon.

Parijsstraat: skate shop and coffee, side by side

Twits and Coffee Onan sit a few doors apart on Parijsstraat, and it's the best pairing in the city. Twits leans skate — Stüssy, Palace, Vans and Iriedaily on the racks — and Coffee Onan next door is the natural stop before or after.

Dirk Boutslaan: on the other side of the center

On the other side of the center, Trash LifeTrash Life stocks Supreme, Vans and Cheap Monday alongside a rotating sneaker selection. It's further from Parijsstraat than the other spots on this list, but it's the one shop in Leuven that consistently carries stock you won't find anywhere else in the city.

The coffee route: Mok, Noir and HAL 5

Mok Leuven on Diestsestraat and Noir Coffeebar on Naamsestraat both sit close to Grote Markt, on opposite sides of the old center, so either works as a starting or finishing point. HAL 5 is over by the station, which makes it the natural last stop if you're wrapping up the day there.

How to plan the day

Start on Parijsstraat for Twits and Coffee Onan, then cut across the center to Diestsestraat and Naamsestraat for Mok and Noir. Fit in Trash Life on Dirk Boutslaan wherever it works with your route, and finish at HAL 5 near the station on your way out.
